Guide · Tasman

Abel Tasman — golden sand, quietly.

New Zealand's smallest national park hides some of its finest coastline. Skip the full four-day tramp — the smart way to see Abel Tasman is a mix of water taxi, kayak, and a night in a boutique lodge on the edge of the park.

01

The coast track, in pieces

The 60km Coast Track is one of Aotearoa's Great Walks, but you do not need to hike it end to end. A water taxi to Bark Bay, followed by a two-hour walk to Anchorage and a pickup back to Kaiteriteri, gives you the best beaches with none of the sore feet.

02

Kayaking

The paddle from Torrent Bay to Adele Island — a fur seal colony less than an hour offshore — is achievable for any moderately fit traveller. Small-group guided kayak tours are safer and far more rewarding than going solo; the guides know which coves the fur seal pups favour.

03

The upgrade angle

A private water-taxi charter — you set the pickup point, the beaches, and the picnic stops — costs less than most families expect. Combine it with a night at Awaroa Lodge (accessible only by boat or foot) and you have a two-day escape that most visitors never even hear about.
