Wānaka — the quieter alpine.

An hour over the Crown Range from Queenstown and a world away in tempo, Wānaka is where travellers come when they want the mountains without the queue. The trick is knowing which trails, which lodges, and when to visit.

01

The trails

Roys Peak is the Instagram trail — spectacular, punishing, and increasingly busy. For the same reward with a quarter of the traffic, Isthmus Peak on the opposite side of the lake delivers a 360° view most visitors never see. Go early; take a headlamp for the descent.

02

The lone tree

Yes, visit it — but at dawn, and from Eely Point rather than the main lakefront. The willow (yes, technically a crack willow, not a tree in the pure sense) is best photographed when the lake is glassy and the crowd hasn't yet arrived from town.

03

The upgrade angle

A handful of boutique lodges on the western shore of Lake Wānaka — private, all-inclusive, no more than a dozen rooms — offer heli transfers direct from Queenstown airport. Skip the shuttle, arrive by helicopter, and start the trip properly.
